Dell Moves Critical Data From Sun Servers To Linuxby Dave MurphyISSN 1535-3613
The new Linux servers will operate as a cluster. The cluster of low-cost computers will be less expensive to operate than a single Sun Microsystems server, and the new cluster will increase performance and reliability. The Oracle 9i RAC (Real Application clusters) database program will run on the Red Hat Linux operating system.
Dave's OpinionGood for the folks from Round Rock, Texas. It often takes someone with the courage of a Texas cowboy to fly in the face of convention and start using a better tool. Linux clusters are a viable alternative to single higher-priced servers, and Dell seems to have the courage to implement their convictions. Dell's had a love-hate relationship with Linux for many years, the love seems to come from recognizing the value and capability of the operating system, the hate seems to come from their relationship with Microsoft, which sees, but doesn't openly acknowledge, Linux as a competitor of both the Windows server and desktop operating systems.
