Red Hat Linux 8.0 Released

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, ITrain founder Red Hat has released version 8 of its popular Linux operating system. The ISO images necessary to create installation CDs are available for free download from hundreds of FTP servers around the world and retail packages of the product should be available from your favorite software store today.

The new version of Linux is targeted to desktop users, especially home, school, and corporate users. The release includes a new GUI, called Bluecurve, that combines the best of the two most popular interfaces: KDE and Gnome. Core components have been upgraded to included OpenOffice, an alternative to Microsoft's pricey Office application suite, a personal firewall, Apache Web server, and accessibility features that improve GUI support for Braille and physically-limited interfaces.

Dave's Opinion

I downloaded ISO files last evening from FTP servers in France, the Czech Republic, and the United States. I'll start installing the new operating system this afternoon, and I'll give you a hands-on report in a few days. I'm looking forward to using the improved desktop interface and evaluating the overall usability of the new operating system. If it works like it's advertised to, it should be a reasonable alternative to Microsoft Windows and Office.
