Windows XP Update Gets Tested

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, ITrain founder Microsoft will release a version of the Windows XP (WinXP) update to testers today. The update, called Service Pack 1 (SP1) will be delivered to 10,000 testers. WinXP SP1 should make it easier for users to choose to install third-party software applications rather than Microsoft's own products.

WinXP SP1 introduces four options for managing, customizing or removing Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Windows Media Player, Windows Messenger, Microsoft's version of the Java Virtual Machine, and other applications that were written by competitors. SP1 also introduces support for new technologies--such as Mira "smart" display devices, Tablet PCs and the Freestyle digital media interface.

Dave's Opinion

In addition to adding new features and fixing a few bugs, WinXP SP1's greatest service is its option to allow users to remove Microsoft's middleware applications: Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, etc. These applications are some of the most popular applications in their class; however, that's because they came for free with Windows. Most competent technical users report these applications are bloated, slow bug-ridden targets for crackers and other digital malcontents.

It's about time that all users had the option to successfully install and operate the middleware applications of their choice.
