UnitedLinux -Linux Standardization Effort

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, ITrain founder Four Linux vendors today announced plans to create a standardized version of Linux to help set the expectations of information systems (IS) engineers and facilitate the development of new applications by software vendors. Currently, each Linux distribution is different, although the core code, known as the kernel, is the same.

In today's announcement, Caldera International Inc., SuSE Linux AG, Conectiva S.A. and Turbolinux Inc. along with more than a dozen other hardware and software vendors joined the promise to deliver a standardized version of Linux by the end of the year. Also joining in the announcement were IBM, HP, AMD. and Intel.

The dominant Linux distributor, Red Hat, didn't join the announcement, leading to speculation that the joint plans include delivering a uniform version of Linux to compete with Red Hat; however, the four charter UnitedLinux partners insist that the joint project is open to all Linux distributors.

By standardizing the operating system, UnitedLinux members anticipate that software vendors would have fewer incompatibilities amongst the Linux versions and IS staff will be able to focus their proficiency on a industry standard package.

Dave's Opinion

This is a mighty effort. There is a lot of money at stake here, and the partners are individually lead by some very big egos. I'd like to see a uniform core Linux release; however, I'm not sure these players will get along nicely in the long run.
