Dial a Coke and a Friend

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, ITrain founder I love reading the morning news reports. It's the time of day when all the truly fun articles surface. This one's just in from Australia, and I think it's demonstrates a great way use technology to improve our lives.

I think the Coca Cola company has always been a master at market research: really understanding what the market audience wants. Now in both Australia and Chile, if you're out tooling around in the hot southern hemisphere sun and you get so thirsty that your tongue's hanging out, you don't have to worry whether you've got enough coin in your Levis to get a Coke from the machine.

You can "Dial a Coke." The brainchild of some really forward-thinking marketing executives; in Australia, it's managed by Telestra. Dial a Coke let's you push the button for a bottle of sugar water & caramel with the tab going to your mobile phone bill. And there's no extra charge for the service.

This is a great way to meld communications IT into the popular culture. Heck, it may even encourage a few pre-pubescent wireless holdouts to get a phone to satisfy their thirst.
