Dial a Coke and a Friendby Dave MurphyISSN 1535-3613
I think the Coca Cola company has always been a master at market research: really understanding what the market audience wants. Now in both Australia and Chile, if you're out tooling around in the hot southern hemisphere sun and you get so thirsty that your tongue's hanging out, you don't have to worry whether you've got enough coin in your Levis to get a Coke from the machine. You can "Dial a Coke." The brainchild of some really forward-thinking marketing executives; in Australia, it's managed by Telestra. Dial a Coke let's you push the button for a bottle of sugar water & caramel with the tab going to your mobile phone bill. And there's no extra charge for the service. This is a great way to meld communications IT into the popular culture. Heck, it may even encourage a few pre-pubescent wireless holdouts to get a phone to satisfy their thirst.
