Linux Kernel 2.4 Released

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, ITrain founder The much-anticipated 2.4.0 version of the Linux Kernel was released last evening by Linux creator Linux Torvalds. "In short, 2.4.0 is out there," Torvalds wrote in a message to the Kernel Mailing List linux-kernel@vger.kernel.org.

Torvalds announced in October at the Linux World Conference and Expo in Berlin that the kernel would be available in December. This is a keenly-awaited update for corporate Linux users worldwide. It offers symmetrical multiprocessing scalability that makes it possible for Linux servers to support much larger, more data-intensive corporate applications using standard hardware platforms.

I'll be upgrading our office servers over the next few days. I'll give you a report when the modifications are complete.

It sounds like Torvalds is in need some well-earned sleep; in his message he said "Anxiously awaited for the last too many months, 2.4.0 brings to the table many improvements, none of which come to mind to the exhausted release manager right now."
