Internet to be Shut Off for Two Hours

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, ITrain founder IOMA, the Internet Overall Management Authority, headquartered in La Grange, New York announced at a press conference this morning that the Internet will be shut down for a 2-hour preventive maintenance check and system upgrade starting at 12:00 P.M. GMT. We selected today for the downtime because it is Saturday, and fewer e-commerce transactions are anticipated.

Ryan Stone, IOMA's executive director and the IT industry's leading spokesperson, said during the press interview, "It's imperative that all ISPs, including the two leading service providers, participate in this global period of digital housekeeping."

Stone, a vocal supporter of periodic system upgrades and a well-respected author on data system integrity and IT management, described this first-ever maintenance period as a "critical and necessary part of international data systems."

He continued, "With the Internet now connecting every country on earth and billions of dollars of annual e-commerce revenue flowing through its pipeline, it's to be expected that the global information infrastructure will periodically require offline systems maintenance."

While this "system cleaning" and upgrade will the first time the Internet has been turned off, there's less than a 10 percent chance of the global information superhighway not coming back online properly after the 2-hour period.

Stone, in responding to pointed questions from the press, likened the maintenance to an automotive oil change. "We all have our car's oil changed every 3,000 miles or so. And as long as we visit a reputable mechanic, there's usually not any problem."

Stone went on to say, "IOMA has taken great efforts to select a team of world-class networking engineers to perform this delicate and important task. We expect that our team will perform flawlessly and the Management Authority [IOMA] has backup plans prepared in the case of catastrophic failure."

IOMA is famous for its operating anthem of "Let's get it done better, faster, and cheaper." Since being granted overall authority over the global Internet, IOMA has never exceeded its prosposed budgets, and it has a better than 87 percent success rate on its previous intra-country net upgrades.
