Distributed Denial of Service Attacks Hit the Netby Dave MurphyISSN 1535-3613
These sites were able to thwart the attacks in about an hour. The San Francisco FBI (U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation) office is investigating. Distributed Denial of Service attacks aren't particularly new; however, because they can affect public perceptions of the targeted e-commerce site, they may not always be reported. The DDOS attacks use multiple Internet sites to send requests for data very quickly. This high-volume traffic can easily overwhelm a webserver, thereby making the site unavailable to other visitors. The CERT Coordination Center at Carnegie-Mellon University recently held a workshop concerning this type of attack. Also, CERT has issued advisory warnings to network administrators about this type of threat.
