Denial of Service Attack

The random file, as specified in the $random_file perl variable was unopenable.

The file was not found on your file system. This means that it has either not been created or the path you have specified in $trrandom_file is incorrect.

Hackers Take Down Yahoo!

Dave Murphy, ITrain founder Yahoo! did not have a good day yesterday. A malicious attack rendered the popular portal inaccessible Monday from about 10:30a.m. until 1:30p.m. PST.

A coordinated, multi-point attack on Yahoo!'s California data center shut down the site sporadically. The so-called "distributed denial of service attack" works by bombarding servers with so much fake traffic that genuine traffic cannot get through. Yahoo!'s system admins quickly discovered the problem and their redundant servers on the East coast picked up the overload.

About 1:30p.m., filters were installed on the routers that blocked the bogus request. Soon thereafter, normal traffic patterns were restored.

A meeting is scheduled this afternoon where the FBI and Yahoo! managers will decide if further FBI involvement is warranted.

The attack originated from 50 different Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, according to the Yahoo! representatives. Up to 1 gigabyte (GB) of requests per second flooded Yahoo's routers.

I think Yahoo! is believed to be the biggest site ever to be forced offline by a denial-of-service attack.
