AOL 5.0: Hyperaggressive Installation

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, ITrain founder Fred Langa recently tried to upgrade his AOL 4.0 to version 5.0. My first comment upon learning that he had tried was "Why? Who with a sense of technical savvy would want to use AOL anyway?"

Here's the first sentence, straight from Fred's installation report: "AOL hosed another system of mine. I recently tried to upgrade a system here from AOL 4 to AOL 5; I'll spare you the details, but the punchline was 'Format C:\' "

AOL is only for rank novices. It's great if you've got a stand-alone system that never needs to make a modem connection to any service other than AOL and you'll never attempt to bring this PC into the office or connect it to any other computer network. It also helps if you only use the software AOL provides and you don't have a printer, scanner, or audio card installed. I've seen AOL trash the configuration of all of these peripherals.

I'm reading reports, Fred's and others, about how aggressive AOL 5.0's installation is. There's a better than fair chance that after attempting to install AOL 5.0, you'll have lost some other functionality of your system.

I like AOL as a stock investment, but I don't like their software installation process.
