Windows 98 Critical Update Bug

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, ITrain founder A critical update for Windows 98 users is causing headaches for some users. The update to Microsoft's flagship operating system enhances Java technology, but is, in fact, preventing some users from accessing the Microsoft Windows update site altogether.

Microsoft has not determined the cause of this problem, and the techs have not released a patch to the patch.

Some users, who have received notification from Microsoft that a new critical update is available, or who have manually visited the Microsoft Windows Update page, and then installed the patch for the Java Virtual Machine, are then prevented from again visiting the update page to download and install other patches.

Microsoft acknowledges the bug, doesn't have a workaround; however, installing Internet Explore 5.01 seems to fix the problem, although Microsoft techs admit they don't know why.
