Corel Announces Linux Release

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, ITrain founder At Comdex today, Corel launching its own version of Linux at its booth, rather than at a closed press conference, thereby emphasizing that Linux is "for the people." Linux the open-development operating system (OS) has make headway into the file and web server markets, that are the mainstay of Microsoft's Windows NT OS. But with this announcement, Corel is heading out for the desktop market to challenge Windows 98 and Windows 2000.

"DOS had ten years, Windows has had the last ten years, and now it's time for Linux," said Michael Cowpland, president and chief executive officer of Corel.

Three versions of Corel Linux were announced today:

  1. a free version that can be downloaded from the Corel website
  2. a $49 standard version that includes a light version of WordPerfect
  3. a $89 deluxe version that includes the full WordPerfect program and backup software.
Both of the fee versions of Corel Linux include some technical support.

"Today, Corel Linux is as easy to use as Windows," Cowpland said, noting that Corel's booth features six applications running on Linux, including WordPerfect, Quattro Pro - the spreadsheet, Paradox - the database management application, and Presentations-the graphic presentation software.

Many system administrators to whom I speak are concerned with Windows NT's use of system resources and it's tendency to crash and require rebooting. In my experience, Linux doesn't have this problem, and it's a stable file and webserver.
