AMD Readies 64bit SledgeHammer

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, ITrain founder The code name for the latest microprocessor from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) may give a hint as to how AMD feels about Intel and its chips.

The x86 64bit chip, codenamed SledgeHammer, was described by Fred Weber , AMD's vice president of engineering, today.

According to AMD, its x86 64bit architecture will run both 32bit and 64bit applications, automatically switching modes as required, with no user intervention.

Lightning Data Transport, the new system bus outlined by AMD, will support bandwidth as high as 6.4Gbits/second and will have an internal data link allowing bandwidth increases for I/O (input/output), coprocessing, and multiprocessing.

In a competing statement, Intel reports that its new 64bit chip, codenamed Itanium (formerly Merced) will also be backward-compatible with 32-bit applications.

What do you think? Are you set for the new AMD chip or will you use Intel? Leave your comments on the message center.
