Microsoft About-Face: Win95 Y2K Patch Released

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, ITrain founder Microsoft has turned 180 degrees. Now, instead of recommending that customers concerned with Y2K compliance upgrade to Win98 or WinNT, it's issuing a patch that will make Win95 Y2K compliant.

Electronic Data Systems Corp. (EDS) says it was told by Microsoft to upgrade all of it's 100,000 Win95 PCs to Win98 to ensure full compliance with Y2K standards. But Microsoft denies ever giving this advice.

EDS began to move on the project, and stirrings were heard in other business circles when word of the EDS project leaked earlier this week. In a quick reversal, Microsoft has prepared a patch that will fix most Y2K issues with Win95. Now, EDS (and all other Win95 users) has only to install the patch.

My recommendation is for Win95 business users to upgrade to Win98 in most instances. The OS is faster than Win95, and it offers backward compatibility with most older software applications (this compatibility may not be present in versions of WinNT).

What do you think? Are you still using Win95 or did you move to Win98? Or are you moving totally to a different OS, such as Linux? Leave your comments on the Message Center

p.s. look for my article in the coming days describing how we upgraded our corporate headquarters from Novell NetWare Servers to Red Hat Linux 5.2 (the project's finished today, and I got home in time for dinner with my family!).
