IBM To Install Linux On PCs & RS/6000 Servers

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, ITrain founder IBM's looking to move Linux deep in to the corporate enterprise. And to do so, Big Blue will install the UNIX-like operating system on PCs and will develop a special version of Linux for it's RS/6000 servers. Details of the plan will be released on March 2d at LinuxWorld in San Jose, California.

To keep the market channel moving and development of Linux open, IBM will partner with more than one commercial Linux vendor, including Red Hat Software Inc., Pacific HiTech Inc., Caldera Systems Inc., and S.u.S.E.

Other companies that have inked deals with Red Hat, the most notable of the commercial Linux vendors are Hewlett-Packard Co., Dell Computer Corp., Silicon Graphics Inc. and Compaq Computer Corp.

What do you think? Is Big Blue on the mark? Should the major hardware vendors support Linux? Leave your comments on the message center.

p.s. I haven't heard any substantial news about today's "Windows Refund Day," (see Wanna Make A Buck? - Dump Windows, Use Linux ). I'll keep my ears open, when I've got something worth saying, I'll let you know.
