Western Digital Outpaces Competition

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, ITrain founder Western Digital, using IBM's production technology, will begin shipping ultra-high performance hard drives with a 20% price premium, putting it in the cat bird's seat relative to profitability.

Western Digital's new 7,200-rotation-per-minute drive, the WD Expert, will replace the company's older Caviar drive for high-performance PCs, relegating the 5,400-rpm Caviar to mainstream and low-end PCs.

The new drives will be perfect for file servers and high-performance workstations. They will transfer data at 66MB/second, about twice as fast as current top-line drives.

The Expert will also ship three months ahead of schedule because of Western Digital's smooth working relationship with IBM, which designed the drive. The Expert is the first product to result from Western Digital's May 1998 agreement with IBM that allows Western Digital to purchase components, firmware, or entire drive designs directly from IBM.

WD's Expert drives will begin shipping next month. The drives will be available in 18GB, 13.5GB, and 9.1GB versions.
