Microsoft Office 2000 Requires Registration

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, ITrain founder The academic version of Microsoft Office 2000 sold in the United States and Canada, as well as versions sold in Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil will include a Registration Wizard that will prevent the software from running if it hasn't been registered after 50 uses.

According to Office product manager John Duncan, the goal is to combat software piracy.

"We really want to get this right, so hopefully we'll be making this a successful effort to combat piracy while not getting in the way of making Office 2000 easy to use for customers," Duncan said.

Office 2000, expected to be released in the second quarter of 1999, will include five registration options: Internet, email, fax, postal mail, and telephone. The user will be required to return a 15-character installation ID to Microsoft, and in return, the user will receive a registration confirmation number that will unlock Office 2000.

If the required registration program is successful for these products, it may be included in all retail versions of Office 2000 and other Microsoft products.
