Microsoft Tests More Win98 Patches

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, ITrain founder Microsoft released the latest Windows 98 Service Pack to testers this week. The update, called Service Pack 1 (SP-1) includes bug fixes and enhancements to Win98 applications.

The testing of Win98 SP-1 is split between two groups of testers: one evaluates SP-1's suitability for the consumer market, the other group evaluates SP-1's readiness for the PC manufacturer, OEM, market.

Current Win98 users complain about incomplete upgrades and compatibility issues with some peripherals, like modems. In addition to correcting issues such as these, SP-1 will include increased functionality for the user.

Win98 SP-1 will include:

  • Support for modular Device Bay hardware.
  • Additional support for modem drivers.
  • Increased support for USB modems.
  • WebTV for Windows update.
  • Additional support for local area networks.
  • Security updates.
  • Networking enhancements that will enable dial-up connections over ATM networks

In addition to the features being tested by the consumer group, the OEM testers will evaluate Internet Explorer 5.0 and DirectX 6.1.

Dave Murphy of ITrain, the International Association of Information Technology Trainers, said, "It's important that Microsoft Windows 98 become as stable and accessible to the mainstream consumer as possible. When this happens, IT managers will accept it as a "must-have" product and businesses will follow the consumer market and make the switch from Windows 3.1x."
