Microsoft Improves On-Screen Text Readability

by Dave Murphy
ISSN 1535-3613

Dave Murphy, ITrain founder Microsoft will improve the readability of on-screen text using a new technology called Clear Type. By more accurately controlling the screen pixels and the space between the pixels, Microsoft's researchers offer the computer giant a significant advantage in the electronic publishing industry.

By allowing for the rendering of characters in sizes that are not limited to the exact size of a pixel, ClearType shows a much sharper character than current gray-scale text, which may look fuzzy or jagged.

ClearType brings additional functionality to the True Type Font Rasterizer that ships in Windows 98, Windows NT, and Windows CE, according to Bill Hill, a product manager at Microsoft Research.

I hail the upcoming release of ClearType as the harbinger of the electronic publishing age.

"A few ITrain members are publishing their training materials in e-book format; however, current tools don't support on-screen viewing of the texts. The texts are delivered in e-book format, but are published with the final goal of paper dissemination and use," Murphy said.

Microsoft's website is www.microsoft.com.
